Black Widows and Brown Recluses

While there are many harmless spiders in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the highly venomous black widows and brown recluses can be found in many areas of the state. The black widow, highly recognizable due to its black and red coloring, has a nasty bite that can cause flu-like symptoms. It is rarely lethal, except for small children and seniors, but can cause severe pain.

The brown recluse has a difficult time with Pennsylvania weather and will take refuge in heated buildings during the cold winter months. The bite from this spider is highly toxic and can kill the skin around the bite area.
